Ristar is a lively platformer where your main gimmick is your extendable arms. You can stretch in eight directions to grab enemies, swing across gaps, climb walls and pull off some seriously satisfying moves. The levels are bright, varied and full of personality, taking you through forests, underwater zones, space stations and more.

The controls feel responsive on the Game Gear, and once you get used to the stretchy mechanics it becomes very fluid. Each world ends with a fun boss fight that usually requires clever use of your stretching powers. Collecting stars and hidden items adds a nice bit of exploration too.

The arm snap? Some sections can feel fiddly on the small screen, especially when you need precise stretches or swinging. A few platforming bits are quite punishing if you mistime a grab, and the hit detection can be a bit generous in the wrong direction. It’s not the easiest game, and dying in a tricky spot can get annoying fast.

Still, when you nail a long swinging sequence or perfectly grab an enemy from across the screen, it feels brilliant.

Graphics: Bright and Bouncy

The levels are packed with detail and vibrant backgrounds. Enemies are quirky and fun, and the whole game has that cheerful Sega flair that still holds up nicely today.

The music is upbeat and energetic, with cheerful melodies that match the game’s bouncy feel. Sound effects are solid too – stretching arms, enemy hits and successful grabs all sound satisfying. It’s simple Game Gear audio but it fits the fun vibe perfectly.

Replayability: A Stretch Worth Repeating

There’s decent reason to come back. Mastering the stretch mechanics, finding all the hidden items and trying to beat your times on each stage gives you clear goals. It’s short enough for a quick blast but fun enough to replay when you fancy some elastic platforming action.
