Gameplay: Punch, Kick, and Clear the Streets

Streets of Rage 2 on the Sega Game Gear lets you choose from the classic heroes as you fight your way through waves of thugs, knife-wielding punks and massive bosses across eight action-packed stages. You’ve got punches, kicks, throws, special attacks and even the famous police car backup to clear the screen when things get too hairy.

The controls feel surprisingly decent on the Game Gear d-pad. The combat has that satisfying weighty feel as you chain together combos and suplex bad guys into the floor. Each character plays differently – Axel’s powerful, Blaze is fast and technical, Max is a walking tank, and Skate brings speed and agility in this Streets of Rage 2 handheld beat-em-up.

The back-alley beatdown? The Game Gear version is noticeably scaled back from the Mega Drive original. Some moves feel a bit stiff, enemy patterns can be cheap, and the smaller screen makes it harder to see what’s coming at you. Later stages get very tough very quickly, and dying sends you back a fair way. It’s still a solid brawler in this Streets of Rage 2 Game Gear release, but it loses some of the arcade magic in the transition to handheld.

Still, when you’re smashing through a crowd with a well-timed special move, it’s proper good fun.

Trying different characters, chasing higher scores, or just jumping in for a quick blast through the streets keeps it fresh. Two-player link-up (if you’ve got the cable) adds even more fun.
